Southern Tuna Salad Recipe

 I’m here to share my family’s favorite recipe for Southern-style Tuna Salad – one that has been passed down through generations and enjoyed in many a home over the years.

This classic dish is full of flavor and crunchy textures – something sure to be loved by all. Furthermore, thanks to its simplicity and versatility, it makes an ideal quick meal when you’re pressed for time or need delicious leftovers for a great lunch the next day.

What are the basic ingredients in this classic southern tuna salad recipe?

  • Tuna
  • Hard- boiled Eggs
  • Mayo & Mustard
  • Sweet Pickle Relish
  • Yellow Onion
  • Salt & Pepper

How to serve this classic recipe?

  • On a bed of lettuce with crackers
  • As a sandwich, using your favorite bread, with a side of potato chips and a few sweet pickles.
  • As a lettuce wrap for a light dinner or lunch.
  • Make a tuna melt using toasted bread and melted cheese. We love this served with french fries.
  • Serve in mini red bell peppers.
  • Serve on buttery croissants with a ripe tomato and lettuce leaves. (This is also my favorite way to eat chicken salad.)

  2. Add a chopped apple or use a box grater to add grated apples.
  3. Swap the yellow onion with a red onion.
  4. Use dijon mustard for a slightly spicy taste.
  5. Swap regular dill pickle relish for the sweet relish.
  6. Add fresh celery for a more crisp texture.

How to store this classic tuna salad recipe?

If you aren’t serving immediately, store in the fridge in an airtight container. I typically store this for no more than 3 days.

Southern Tuna Salad

Ingredients
  

  • 5 oz tuna
  • 2 eggs hardboiled and roughly chopped
  • ¼ c mayo
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 2 tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • ¼ c sweet yellow onion finely chopped
  • Salt & Pepper to Taste

Instructions
 

  • Mix tuna with mayo, mustard, and relish.
  • Fold in egg and onion. Add salt & pepper to taste.
